WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU ARE IN AN ACCIDENT

If you are involved in an accident, always be sure to obtain the following information:

  • Names and addresses of all others involved (including witnesses)
  • Driver’s License numbers of the parties involved in the accident.
  • License plate numbers of the vehicles involved in the accident.
  • Name of the other driver’s insurance company.
  • Note the make, model and year of the vehicles involved.
  • Draw the scene of the accident.

When outlining the scene of an accident, Indicate roadways, driveways, road signs, vehicles, pedestrians and direction of vehicles at time of collision.

ALWAYS call the police if injuries or property damage occurred. The police will assist in obtaining relevant information from the parties.

NEVER move the vehicles unless it is a hazard to leave them as they are.

IMMEDIATELY obtain medical attention for your injuries. Call 911.

ALWAYS get names, addresses and telephone numbers of all witnesses.

Make sure you:

GET MEDICAL ATTENTION

As soon as possible for any injuries sustained in the accident and encourage you passengers to do the same. Remember that you may not actually experience symptoms until some time after the accident. Be sure you tell your medical provider or emergency personnel all the problems you are experiencing. Do not leave anything out.

NOTIFY YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY

Do this promptly about the accident to preserve your right to Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage, comprehensive or collision, or uninsured (UM) or underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage.

DO NOT DISCUSS THE ACCIDENT

Do not discuss with anyone outside of your insurance company, your doctors, the police or your attorney.

DO NOT SIGN ANY DOCUMENT

Do not sign anything without first consulting your attorney. In particular do not sign a release without consulting an attorney no matter what verbal representations are made by the other driver’s insurance adjuster. Once you sign a comprehensive release, you may be barred from obtaining further financial compensation for your injuries, including medical expenses or lost earnings, from the at fault driver or their insurance company, no matter how badly you are injured.

KEEP RECORDS AND RECEIPTS

Take note of all medical expenses you incur, including medication and medical devices you have to purchase.

PHOTOGRAPH

If possible, photograph all visible injuries, such as casts, stitches, bruises and scrapes.
